Lake Garda or Lake Como? It is not an easy choice when it comes to the natural wonder of Lake Garda or the elegance of Lake Como. So there is no universal correct answer, only a choice that’s right for you.

If you don’t have time to visit all of the Italian Lakes in the north of the Italian country, it can be hard to know if you should head to Lake Garda or Lake Como. Both the lakes offer an authentic experience, thanks to their temperatures, landscapes and activities.

Alternatively, if you love exploring towns and villages and are willing to spend a more luxury experience, Lake Como is the best destination you might choose.

Accessibility and position of Lake Garda and Lake Como

Lake Garda is situated in 3 different regions of Northern Italy: Lombardy to the west, Veneto to the east and Trentino Alto-Adige to the north. Lake Garda is easier to get to from Venice and Verona, which is the closest city. If you decide to take the train, then make sure you get off at Peschiera del Garda or Desenzano Del Garda stops. Reaching the south bank of Lake Garda is really accessible: there are ferries and boat transfers on the lake and train stations too, but the easiest way to get to Lake Garda is by car (do not forget to pay attention to traffic, if you choose to drive).

Lake Como is situated in Lombardy region and it is very easy to reach from Milan. It is one of the most accessible non-city destinations in Italy. By car or train, you can reach your getaway within an hour if you’re traveling from one of Milan’s main airports. If you are traveling by train, you will want to stop at Como Lago or Como San Giovanni depending on where you will stay. Then you can take a public bus or go out for a walk. Renting a car will give you the most flexibility.

Attractions: history or celebrities?

For castles and Roman ruins, head to Lake Garda. For example Lake Garda’s town of Sirmione may be touristy, but it also boasts two popular sights: the imposing Scaligero Castle, which dates back to the 13th century, and the ruins of the Grotte di Catullo, an ancient Roman villa. If you prefer to grab a ferry or a boat taxi north from Sirmione, there are rugged hiking and biking paths.

Are you in search of celebrities instead? Go to Lake Como. Both lakes have always been beloved by celebrities, but these days, it’s Lake Como that is getting the most Hollywood celebrities. George Clooney, Madonna and Gianni Versace own villas here. Lake Como has long been associated as the summer playground for the rich and famous, thanks to boasting idyllic towns and plenty of villas.

Affordability and prices

No matter what vacation you are planning, the cost is an important factor.

Lake Garda may have marginally lower prices than Como: it should be a more family-friendly holiday location. This is also a great getaway for backpackers, especially because of all of the outdoor activities that this tourist destination offers.

Alternatively, you may find prices in Lake Como to be generally higher than the ones in Lake Garda. Lake Como tends to cater more towards a luxury traveller, however, you can still find affordable accommodation and meals, especially if you go away from tourist centres.

In general, the Lombardy region, where Lake Garda and Lake Como are, is rather expensive as compared to other regions in the country.

Landscapes and beauty

Choosing between these two destinations is hard because of the beauty they both exude. No matter which lake you choose, your mind will fill with inspiring views.

From north to south, on Lake Garda you can find peace, quiet and relaxation.

Lake Como’s elegance and luxury are the perfect frame for the landscape natural beauty. Here you will also find benches and hidden alcoves in a breathtaking surrounding.

Tourism on Lake Garda and Lake Como

Lake Garda and Lake Como are two of the most popular tourist destinations in the European country not only because of their unbelievable beauty and attractions but also because of films, novels and villas occupied by celebrities, poets and musicians.

Both lakes have their touristy and less-touristy spots: the general perception is that Lake Garda is more touristy and crowded than Lake Como. But don’t worry… Lake Garda has also plenty of quiet, tranquil places. The northern part of the lake, for example, is surrounded by mountains and it is more undeveloped. If you go beyond hubs like Sirmione, which is gorgeous but often full of day trippers, then you will find an untouched paradise waiting.

On the other hand, Lake Como is developed all the way around the lake… Como, Bellagio and Varenna are especially popular with tourists, but it is definitely possible to escape from the hustle and bustle and experience a quieter, more relaxed and authentic Lake Como experience.

The best times to visit both the lakes are during the shoulder seasons where you can still capture perfect weather but without the crowds.

Regardless of whether you choose to visit Lake Garda or Lake Como, you cannot make a bad decision. Both lakes have something to suit all kinds of travellers. This is a very nice region to visit in Northern Italy.
